According to the breed standard Flat-Coated Retrievers are solid black or liver with a dense medium-length coat that lays flat although a small amount of waviness is acceptable. Il a plusieurs points de ressemblance avec le Golden-Retriever et le Labrador-Retriever mais il est moins connu. The Flat-Coated Retrievers eponymous flat-lying coat comes in lustrous black or liver with feathering at the legs and tail.

These dogs are intended to be lean and powerful with well-balanced body proportions.
